  • Mangú: One Of The Greatest Dominican Breakfast

Hey y’all, we have another good one for you today! This is definitely one of my favorite dishes in the whole wide world. I know, crazy right!? But once you try this beautiful mixture you will see what I’m talking about.

    What is mangú?

Mangú is one of the most typical Dominican breakfasts in the Dominican Republic. Mangú are boiled and mashed green plantains combined with a little bit of salt, water and butter. This traditional meal consists of mashed plantains (Mangú) and it is often served with fried eggs, cheese, salami and fried onions (los tres golpes). This is how it is typically eaten, but you can definitely eat it with whatever you want. Because, the star here is the mangú. However, I recommend you to try it the Dominican way because it’s absolutely delicious, and it will most likely become one of your favorite meals. Other people eat mangú with the sides separated, not all together like I stated above. Some don’t like this combination so they go for meat, fish and or other side of their preference.

Mangú is a meal that is often referred to as breakfast but in all seriousness, Dominicans eat this at all times, during the morning, day and night. For this recipe you will need butter, salt, oil, onions, plantains, Dominican sausage (salami), eggs, and Dominican white cheese that’s specifically labeled to fry.

We will provide you with an easy and affordable recipe to make for the whole family. Mangú can be done at any time of the day, the key is what you pair it with. Once you have these food items on hand, the process will be fairly easy. Hope you enjoy and have fun creating this meal as much as we do. Don’t forget to not only share this meal with others but also share the recipe with them. Enjoy!

    Ingredients:

    • Plantains (green/unripe)
    • Salt
    • Salted Butter
    • Olive Oil
    • Red Onions
    • Vinegar

    To make mangu

    • 2 plantains (green/unripe)
    • 1½ teaspoons salt
    • 4 tablespoons salted butter or olive oil, whichever you prefer

    Preparation:

    • Peel the plantains (see how-to) and cut lengthwise, then divide each half into two.
    • Boil the plantains in enough water to cover them until they are very tender, having added the salt to the water before the water starts to boil.
    • Remove the plantains from the water and mash them right away with a fork until they are very smooth and there are few to no lumps (be careful not to burn yourself).
    • Mix in butter, and progressively add a cup of water at room temperature and keep mashing and mixing until it turns into a very smooth purée.
    •

    To make onion garnish

    • 2 tablespoon olive oil
    • 2 red onions large
    • 1 tablespoon fruit vinegar
    • salt

    Preparation:

    • Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over low heat.
    • Add onions and cook and stir until they become translucent.
    • Pour in vinegar and season with salt to taste.

  • Lagos NYC: Devouring West African Flavors in the East Coast

If you’re in the mood for immaculate vibes, you need to check out Lagos NYC in Manhattan. Before you go waltzing in you’ll need a reservation with your entire party on location but once you’re all there that’s where the fun begins. This restaurant and lounge has two floors. The live DJ is located on the second level but can be heard throughout the entire venue. During my visit a dance line started from the second floor, made its way down the stairs and back up again. Going back to the first floor, towards the back is a grass wall to capture a pic for Instagram. Those of you who like hookah can smoke while you eat. Those of us who aren’t a fan of having smoke blown all over our food should steer clear as there are no separate accommodations for either situation.

Now the food itself is debatable. Don’t judge me but the first trip I went for brunch and got pancakes, scrambled eggs and mac n’ cheese. There’s not much to say about the pancakes and scrambled eggs but I was going back and forth on whether or not I liked the macaroni. I ended up giving the cheesy pasta to someone else. The second go around another member of my party had sent food back. Then there was the soup. Super spicy to the point she was coughing. I can only assume it tasted extremely good as she kept drinking it. There’s also the drinks but there is one in particular I want to highlight. The Fire On The Mountain. Literally coming in hot, the top of the drink is on fire.

If all of these variables sounds like your speed then head down to the Lagos NYC at 7th Ave in Manhattan.

  • The Most Incredible Latin Empanadas in New York

Hey y’all, we got another hit. And this time it has many locations, so don’t worry there’s probably one store near you. When I was younger I would eat empanadas as breakfasts all the time, crazy right!? But listen, you can’t blame me, they are absolutely incredible. Every time I eat an empanada it takes me back to my childhood, good times.

Where are the best Latin Empanadas?

Empanadas Monumental has the finest empanadas in New York. They have a variety of empanadas that you can’t pass on. However, they don’t just make regular empanadas, they curate a combination of flavors such as an empanada that tastes like pizza and such. They also add different ingredients like cheese, corn and chicken, which might sound a bit weird but trust me. It tastes incredible! I love their empanadas. If you want to have a quick savory snack, stop by and try their variety. Because, I make sure to go and buy me some empanadas every time I see an Empanada Monumental dinner store.

In addition, they also offer different types of food and drinks, not only empanadas. Such as yaroa, natural juices, batidas, sandwiches, quipes, bola de yuca, caprichos, salchipapas and few other items. Point is they have a lot of varieties and the majority of the things I have tried are absolutely delicious.

They have different locations all around the city where you can go and enjoy their delicious delicacies. So, whenever you see an Empanada Monumental, please do yourself a favor and go try it. You will have the time of your life, trust me. Don’t be shy, invite your family and friends to try it with you, you can also order online.

    spooky cinnamon rolls

    Ingredients

    Dough:

    • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
    • ¼ cup sugar
    • 2¼ teaspoons instant yeast
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ½ cup whole milk
    • 3 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1 egg
    • ¼ cup water
    • 2 drops of purple gel food coloring

    Black Filling:

    • 1 stick softened butter
    • ½ cup granulated sugar
    • ½ cup brown sugar
    • 2 tbsp cinnamon
    • 2 tbsp black cocoa (you can find this in specialty stores or online)

    Cream Cheese Glaze:

    • 4 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)
    • 2 tablespoons butter (room temperature)
    • ¾ – 1 cup confectioner’s sugar

    Instructions

    Dough:

    1. Start by mixing your dry ingredients in a large bowl – that’s the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
    2. In a separate microwave-safe bowl, combine the milk, butter, and vegetable oil. Microwave until the mixture is warm but not boiling. Stir in the vanilla and purple gel food coloring.
    3. Slowly add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
    4. Now, add the egg and water to the dough, and knead it until everything is well combined.
    5. Cover your dough and let it rest for about 10 minutes.

    Black Filling:

    1. While the dough is resting, combine the softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and black cocoa in a mixing bowl. Mix it until it’s a smooth, dark, and spooky paste.

    Back to the Dough:

    1. Roll out your dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface. You want it to be about ¼ inch thick.
    2. Spread your sinister black filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
    3. Roll up the dough, starting from one long edge, into a spooky spiral.
    4. Slice the roll into even sections, about 1 to 1.5 inches wide. You should have about 12 spooky spirals.
    5. Place them on a greased or parchment paper-lined baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one. Cover them and let them rest for another 10-15 minutes.
    6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
    7. Bake the cinnamon rolls in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and deliciously spooky.

    For the Cream Cheese Glaze:

    1. While the cinnamon rolls are baking, whip up the cream cheese glaze by mixing room temperature cream cheese, room temperature butter, and confectioner’s sugar in a bowl. Adjust the amount of sugar to your taste, depending on how sweet you like it.
    2. Once the cinnamon rolls are done baking, drizzle that cream cheese glaze all over them while they’re still warm, letting it ooze down the sides like ghostly apparitions.

And there you have it – your Spooky Cinnamon Rolls are ready to sink your teeth into! They’re soft, sweet, and a little bit eerie. Perfect for a Halloween morning or a ghoulish snack. Enjoy, and happy Halloween! 🎃👻

    Ingredients

    • 200g (1.5 cups) all-purpose flour
    • 100g (1 cup) cake flour
    • 50g (1/2 cup) powdered cacao
    • 3g (1 teaspoon) cornstarch
    • 2.5g (3/4 teaspoon) baking soda
    • 4g (1 teaspoon) baking powder
    • 2g (1/2 teaspoon) salt
    • 200g (1 cup) cold butter, cubed
    • 130g (3/4 cup) brown sugar
    • 70g (1/2 cup) white sugar
    • 2 eggs

    Instructions

    1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cake flour, powdered cacao, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix well and set this dry mixture aside.
    3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the cold, cubed butter with the brown and white sugars until the mixture is light and fluffy. This should take about 2-3 minutes.
    4. Add the eggs to the butter and sugar mixture one at a time, beating well after each addition.
    5. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients. Mix until everything is well combined, and a dough forms. It will be quite thick and chocolatey.
    6. Once your cookie dough is ready, use a cookie scoop or your hands to form small, equally sized balls of dough. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving enough space between each ball to allow for spreading.
    7. Now comes the fun part. To create the button eyes, use your thumb or the back of a spoon to make an indentation in the center of each dough ball. Press down gently, but not all the way through the cookie.
    8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes or until the edges of the cookies turn golden brown. Keep a close eye on them to ensure they don’t overbake.
    9. Once baked, remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
    10. To give your button eyes that classic look, you can use a tiny bit of white icing or melted white chocolate to add a small white dot in the center of each indentation. These are the “buttons” for Coraline’s eyes.
    11. Once the icing is set, your Coraline Button Eyes Cookies are ready to serve. These delightful, spooky treats will surely bring the eerie charm of the movie to your kitchen. Enjoy, and be careful not to get too mesmerized by their eyes! 👁🍪
